When you look at these
statistics ask yourself if you would tolerate living in an
environment where you had a significant chance of being murdered, raped or
robbed. Then ask yourself:
Why does the City of Charlotte tolerates high-crime
in predominantly Black neighborhoods but would not allow such crime in
mostly "white" suburbia?
Where you live defines how "safe" you will be in Charlotte. It ought not to be that way. How can children learn and grow up in a healthy environment living in a "hell hole" as some of these neighborhoods are? The County Commission does not have direct authority over "police" functions but we are responsible for funding "welfare". In short, the City inability to deal with crime means higher COUNTY taxes through these additional "welfare" payments and charges for social services such as jails, foster care and family services. Because there is a DIRECT link to the county's budget when the City refuses to act by maintaining "safe" environments, I have proposed to various City Council members "mobile" command posts that would walk and patrol these areas 24/7 to stop this illicit activity. Unfortunately, the ones empowered to serve these poor neighborhoods are the same ones who reject any significant police presence to clean up these areas (generally for racial reasons). |
