This
Genealogy was prepared by Glenna Vickers Burton. The initial generation of
Jacob Maness (Mainous) was based on review of Virginia Census records.
There are "8" generations presented below. Before each name is a
number (for example "1. Jacob Mainous"). The number refers only
that individuals reference on THIS PAGE only. Under the "Children
of..." sections for each family, the "number" assigned to a
child to the left of the name means that genealogical line continues at
that numerical point in this lineage on this page. The number within the
"name" is the genealogical constant or the number of generations
from Jacob Maness - defined as generation 1. The numbers at the end of
names or birth, death, marriage, or burial dates are "endnote"
references indicating the "source" of the data from Ms. Burton.
In some cases, I have added photo's or links to other information to add
to this source knowledge. The endnote references to WFT refer to her
"world Family Tree" not on this site. Click
here to see endnotes
"My"

3. LAZARUS LAWSON2 MAINOUS
(JACOB MANESS/1) was born 14 April 1808 in Lee Co., Virginia6, and died 24
September 1895 in Scoville, KY6. He married REBECCA AMANDA FLANNERY 17
March 1833 in Jonesville, Lee Co, VA7, daughter of THOMAS FLANNERY and
ELIZABETH PARSONS. She was born 28 August 1818 in Lee Co.,Virginia8, and
died 21 February 1899 in Scoville, KY8.
Rebecca's father, Thomas
Flannery, was said to be the the son of John Flannery and Phoebe Boggs
(unconfirmed). In the 1860 Lee County, Virgina Census a Thomas Flannery
(age 78) was listed as married to Elizabeth (Parsons) age 69 with
Thomas being born in Grayson Co. VA and Elizabeth being born in
North Carolina. This would indicate that Thomas was born in 1782 and would
have been 36 when Rebecca Amanda was born. Elizabeth Parsons Flannery
would have been born in 1791 making her 27 at the time of Rebecca Amanda
Flannery's birth. The
early (18th Century) Flannery Genealogy is not well confirmed. As best as
I can tell Rebecca Amanda Flannery's genealogy for several generations
back is thus (unconfirmed):
Thomas Flannery (1722
to 1782)
John Flannery "Flanary" (1750 to 1810) m. Phoebe
Boggs
Thomas Flannery (1782 - ?) m. (Mary Elizabeth Blubaugh) & Elizabeth
Parsons
Rebecca Amanda Flannery (1818-1895) m. Lazarus Lawson Mainous

Notes for LAZARUS LAWSON
MAINOUS:

Lazarus Lawson Mainous was
living in southwestern Virginia, Lee County when in 1848 he transported a
family into KY, hiring out as a Wagoneer. While in Kentucky he selected
and purchase land in Owsley County, KY lives in what is now called
Scoville. He returned to build a two-story log house lives prepare his
land for farming. This log house no longer stands, but his great grandson,
Vol Taylor, presently lives in a house on the original site. Vol Taylor's
line is through Lucy Ellen Holcomb, (his mother) Laura Bell Minter
Holcomb, (his grandmother) and Cynthia Ann Mainous Minter (his
great-grandmother) and Lazarus Lawson Mainous.
In 1852 Lazarus Lawson
Mainous returned with his family through the Cumberland Gap to settle in
Kentucky. His wife, Rebecca Flannery, at this time had 9 children, one
died in infancy (William Mainous) so the family moved to Kentucky with
eight children she had four more children born in Kentucky and lived to be
91. Rebecca brought several pieces of handmade furniture with her on the
trek through the Cumberland Gap, this furniture is now in the possession
of her grandson Arch G. Mainous. Two of Rebecca's brothers, William and
Noel Flannery and Lazarus's nephew Lazarus M. Mainous and their family and
others came to Kentucky with him and his life Rebecca. Lazarus M. Mainous
does not appear in a separate household until the 1870 Census.
Laz as he was called was
named for his maternal grandfather (Lazarus Lawson). With his wife Rebecca
and children they migrated from Lee Co., VA in 1852. They settled at what
now is known as the Mainous place at Scoville, KY. He was well liked in
the community and served as Justice of the Peace and in 1860 officiated at
the wedding of daughter Amanda when married Elcannah Flannery, and at a
later date, at the wedding of daughter Matilda when she married Simpson
Treadway. When Laz came to KY he brought his nephew (a teenager) Lazarus
M., who was the son of Hale Mainous. Laz served as a County Judge for
Owsley Co. for 2 terms and Sheriff for 1 term.
1860 Census shows $4,000 in
real estate. 1870 Census shows $2,400 in real estate, $1,300 personal
property. Living in Travellers Rest, Owsley Co., KY, in 1860-70. There
were no Mainous listings in the 1850 census for Owsley County. Lazarus and Rebecca buried
in Mainous Cemetery in Scoville. Burial: Mainous Cemetery, Scoville, KY8

EXCERPT FROM "KERR'S" HISTORY
OF KENTUCKY regarding Hampton Flanery Minter
Hampton F. Minter. It speaks
well for this native son of Jackson County when it is stated that he has proved most
effectively his pedagogic and executive ability in his administration of
the office of county
superintendent of schools, and it is to the credit of the people of
Jackson County that they have thus marked
their recognition of his ability by selecting him for this important office.
Hampton Flanery Minter was
born on the homestead farm of the family, near the present village of Welchburg,Jackson County, November 16, 1873. His parents, William and Cynthia A. (Mainous) Minter, were born
in Virginia, the former in the year 1833 and the latter in 1834. Their marriage was solemnized in
Lee County, that state, within whose gracious borders the respective families were founded in the
Colonial period of our national history. William Minter was a son of Charles Minter, who passed
his entire life in the old Dominion state, where he became a prosperous planter and slave
holder in Lee County. His death occurred in that county, as did also his wife, whose family name
was Flanery. (editorial note; his wife was Mary Y. Alexander daughter of Alexander
Alexander and Nancy Parsons, no Flanery connection. She died in Owsley County, Ky. and is buried
near Booneville. One of their sons, the late Landon Carter Minter, sacrificed his life while
serving as a gallant soldier of the Union in the Civil war, he having been a captain of Company
"G", Eighth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, with which he was mustered into service at Lebanon,
Kentucky, January 15, 1862, and his death occurred on the 15th of February of the following year, as
the result of wounds he received while taking part in the historic battleof Stone River. William Minter, father of subject of this review, likewise volunteered for service as a soldier of the Union, but
rejected on account of physical disability.
William Minter continued his
residence in Virginia until about the year 1859, when he came to Kentucky and established his
residence in Wolfe County. Within the period of the Civil war he removed to Owsley County,
and there the family home was maintained until about 1870, when removal was made to Jackson
County. Mr. Minter engaged in farm enterprise in the Pond Creek district of the county, and
also followed the trade of blacksmith, in which he was a skilled workman. His death occurred
at what is now Welchburg, this county, in April, 1883, and his venerable widow now resides
in Owsley County, in the home of her daughter Laura, wife of Enoch Holcomb.
William
Minter was a man of strong mentality and well fortified convictions, was a Republican in
politics, and he served a number of terms as a magistrate in Jackson County. Of the children of
William and Cynthia A. (Mainous) Minter the first born was Carter(Landon Carter) who died
in Jackson County when twenty-one years of age. Mrs. Mary A. Fields, a widow, resides in the
state of California;_ (editorial note, This is not correct. her name was Mary Rebecca and she never
married. She went to California to keep house keep house for Cyrus Powell, widowed
husband of her sister Amanda. It did not work out and she returned to the area of Middletown Ohio,
where she died.) Amanda became the wife of Cyrus Powell, who is a farmer and fruit grower in
California, and in that state her death occurred when she was fifty-five ears of age;
-
Lazarus L. is a
farmer near Lawson, Missouri; Charles McClellan was drowned while engaged in stretching
a ferry cable across the Umpqua River in the state of Washington, ( editorial note, the Umpqua
River is in Douglas County in the state of Oregon. ) he having been forty-five years of age at
the time of his death; Sallie Jane died at the age of fifteen years;
-
Laura is the wife of Enoch
Holcomb, a prosperous farmer in Owsley County, Kentucky; John Emerson is a farmer in the vicinity of
Hamilton, Missouri; Dempsey died in childhood;
-
Hampton F. of this
sketch, was the next in
order of birth; and
Mrs. Martha Watson (Matson) resides near Mount Vernon, Illinois, where her
husband is a substantial farmer.
-
The rural schools of Jackson County,
afforded Hampton F. Minter
his preliminary educational discipline, and in selected schools he acquired the equivalent of a
high-school course, besides which he attended one year in normal course, Sue Bennett Memorial
School at London, Laurel County. He has manifested special predilection for study and
reading, and through self-discipline has gained a really liberal education. He continued to
attend schools at intervals until he was twenty-three years of age, and in the meanwhile, about the
time of attaining to his legal majority, he had initiated his successful career as a teacher in the
rural schools of his native county. He made a splendid record in the pedagogic profession,
continued his active service as a teacher in public schools for a period
of fourteen years, and taught
his final term of school in the year of 1917. All this service had been rendered in his native
state, save for a period of eight months devoted to teaching in the
schools of Ochiltree County, Texas. Mr. Minter was elected
county superintendent of schools for Jackson County in November,
1905, assumed his official
duties in the following January, and continued in effective service in
this capacity for the
regular term of four years. For the ensuing five years he was employed in
the department of the United
States Internal Revenue Service, with headquarters in the City of Lawrenceburg, and in
November, 1917, he was again elected county superintendent of schools in his native county. He
initiated his second four year term in January, 1918, and his
administration has been marked by splendid
advancement in the work of the schools under his jurisdiction, he having shown marked
discrimination in coordinating the school activities in the county and bringing the rural as well
as the village schools up to a high standard of efficiency. The county maintains seventy-six
schools and a corps of seventy-nine teachers, and it's enrollment of pupils aggregates 4,000. Mr.
Minter has found time and opportunity to give some attention to the private study of law, and he
was admitted to the bar in the year of 1908. He has practiced law to a limited extent, but has
continued to make educational service his principal work.
Mr. Minter expresses his
political convictions by his alignment in the ranks of the republican party and he and his wife
hold membership in the Reform Church in America, in which he is serving as a deacon of the
church in his home village of McKee, judicial center of Jackson County. Here, in1921, he is
serving as master of William McKinley Lodge No. 793, Free and accepted Masons, besides
which he is noble grand of Clark Lodge No. 217, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, an office in
which he has served several terms. He is a stockholder of the Jackson County Fair
Association, is the owner of two small farms in Jackson County, with a
total area of 119 acres, and owns
also the residence property which represents his home, on Main Street, McKee. Mr. Minter
gave earnest and loyal service in the furtherance of local patriotic movements during the
nation's participation in the World war, and his financial contributions were limited only by his
available means. He served as a member of the executive committee of the Jackson County
Chapter of the Red Cross, of which chapter he was finally made chairman, and he was Government appeal
agent of the Jackson County Draft Board. He gave much time and thought to such
patriotic service and gave much aid in furthering the various local drives
in support of the Government
war bond issues. On the 14th of November, 1907, at Greenhall, Jackson County, was
solemnized the marriage of Mr. Minter to Miss M. Emily Minter, the two families being of remote
kinship. Mrs. Minter is a daughter of Emory and Elizabeth ( Carmack ) Minter, the latter of whom
is deceased and the former of whom is a retired farmer, residing at Greenhall. Mr. and Mrs.
Hampton F. Minter have no children.
This review has been copied
from page 231 & 232 of a book titled History Of Kentucky. It was written in 1921. I have
made a few editorial notes, correcting errors in information. It has been prepared for this
genealogy collection, March 29, 1992, by Dennis L. Minter. Grand Nephew of Hampton F. Minter.
The reference to the connection of the Flanery family comes in through Cynthia A. (Mainous)
Minter. Her mother was a Flanery. Hampton F. Minter Burial: McKee Cemetery,

Notes for JOHN TYLER
MAINOUS (click on name at left to go to his web page):
John Tyler and Mainous was
the 8th child of Lazarus L. Mainous and Rebecca and was less and three
years old when the family came to Kentucky. As a boy of 12 during the
civil war, it was his responsibility to hide the family's horses in the
woods whenever Army or guerrilla forces were in the area, taking them from
farmers by force. His brother Absolom served in the union Army and was
injured and received a pension of $6 per month. It should also be noted
that Lazarus L. was also a union Army veteran. A pension of $6 per month
does not sound like much, but put in perspective, most food and
necessities were raised on the farm, and the pension was used to buy salt,
sugar and coffee which sold for about five cents a pound.
John Tyler Mainous set up
housekeeping in a log cabin on Buck Creek which had been built by early
trapper-hunters by the name of Turner. He had six children by his first
wife, Ellen Botner, who died and nine children by his second wife, Polly
Morgan. The Mainous's in Kentucky were industrious farmers. The original
"Turner Cabin" can be see (before it demolition) by clicking

John Tyler Web page.

The following was written by
his grand neice Glenna Vickers Burton of Bowling Green, KY, on August 28,
1999:
Ellis, being the youngest of
this family, lived at home with his mother
until her death. I remember
my grandmother, Fannie Mainous Botner and my
mother going up there from
Travellers Rest to help care for her. They did
the laundry for her and
Ellis. Ellis inherited the 30 acres that was left
of the homestead. The house
was a 2 storied log house. Hampton had owned
many acres, but according to
my mother, had sold much of it. Ellis was a
playboy of sorts and drank
too much. Mother always said that her grandpa
had sold land to keep Ellis
out of trouble. By this I am assuming that he
got put in jail for public
drunkness and his daddy bailed him out. My
mother and daddy bought the
last 30 acres from Ellis about 1940. The log
house stood for a long time
and Daddy rented it. We were living at
Travellers Rest at this
time. But finally the log house was torn down and
Daddy built a one story
house and lived there until Daddy died and Mother
went to the nursing home. I
can remember going to Gr-grandma Mainous's
funeral. It was held at the
house in the yard. She is buried by Hampton
in the Mainous cemetery near
the homestead of Daniel Mainous at Vincent, Ky.

From Dennis Minter in June
1999: I thought I should clear up
the status of Mary Rebecca Minter. She had a child out of wedlock, Cynthia
Ann, the father was Milton Rice Powell, son of Samuel J. Powell Jr. nephew
of Hiram Sargent Powell. Cynthia lived with her father until she was about
thirteen. She used the last name of Minter. She married Charles Preston
McDowell and raised a large family. Mary Rebecca never married. In the
early 20"s she went to California to keep house for Cyrus Powell, her
widowed brother-in-law. I think he had thoughts of marriage, but she
didn't buy it and returned to Ohio after a year or so.
