Election results land in Limbo
1. GOP ad campaign hits home and robs Helms of 5-7 thousand votes
-
In 2002 (a GOP year) with 47% turnout Helms had 96,064 and Darrel Williams had 85,592 (a gap of 11,000 or so)
-
In 2004 (a Dem year) with close to 60% turnout Helms got 157,327 followed by Rembert with 144,018 (a gap of 13,000 or so)
Like it or not, those ads nailed Parks' hide to the wall and robbed him of about 5 to 7 thousand votes. The turnout was lower (about 30% or so) so the "gap" (normally above 10,000) was less, running about 5 to 7 thousand moving him to the bottom of the pile and adding votes to the GOP (thereby causing all the candidates to be bunched together in a tight clump.
2. Rembert (like Jim Richardson in 2000 and Darrel Williams in 2002) is abandoned by white inner-city Democrats creating the well-known but rarely discussed gap. See EXCEL SUMMARY BELOW
3. Voting Machine irregularities surface (voters push button for one party and get the other - several instances).
4. Challenge procedures for provisional's questioned. The law says that you can't challenge a voter except on election day but to challenge a voter on election day you have to "live in the precinct". The Demo's changed the law in 2005 to say that anyone can vote anywhere. So.......if a voter can vote anywhere but a challenger has to live in a precinct.........well, you get the idea (no one can challenge provisionals at all). Is that legal? Probably not. With 1,300 provisionals handing in the balance the answer to that question is important.
