Police say they made 31 prostitution-related arrests Saturday and early Sunday in a crackdown in west Charlotte.
The prostitution crackdown took place at several sites in the near-west side of Charlotte and was handled by the West Service Area Crime Reduction Unit. The police action began about 2 p.m. Saturday and ended about 1 a.m. Sunday.
During recent community police meetings, a number of residents in the Metro police division – which includes the Beatties Ford Road corridor and parts of the Tuckaseegee Road area – asked police to step up efforts to curb prostitution in their area.
Police said that the 31 arrests in the crackdown led to 62 charges.
They also said seven arrests were made in the Prostitution Exclusion Zone, off Wilkinson Boulevard. Anyone found guilty of prostitution-related activities in that zone, established about two years ago, is prohibited from re-entering the area.
The prostitution crackdown wasn’t the only major police effort over the weekend.
CMPD officers from the Highway Interdiction Safety Team (HITS) and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office also teamed for a DWI crackdown from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday in the University area.
Police set up a checkpoint on University City Boulevard, near UNC Charlotte.
They reported making nine DWI arrests, charged 11 people for driving with revoked licenses, and issued five citations to drivers operating a vehicle with an open container of alcohol inside.
In all, 81 traffic citations were issued.
Traffic collisions remain the major problem for police in the University area.
