The Machinations of Mackey (Part Seven)

Repudiating the 'political prisoners' dogma of the Millions More Movement

What does Mackey really believe?

If this was any 'ol' election (for Dog Catcher or President) reporters would be asking the candidate (or candidates) about their views, their affiliations and how they would do their job, if elected. Chipp Bailey answered questions, Mackey refuses to. In the last month the debate has turned to the Democrat Party's problems however the focus turned away from the dangerous and strange views that Mr. Mackey seems to hold by association with the organizations he is affiliated with.

One of the great unanswered questions of the great Mackey Machination debate is about Mackey and his affiliations with the 'Millions More Movement' and their stated desire to release Black men and women in jail claiming they are 'political prisoners'?

It seems that no one in the mainstream media is interested in knowing the answer to that hot potato question though his views on that are directly related to what he would do as Sheriff, if put into that post.

I received a variety of questions about this issue and decided to go into a little more detail.

The MMM (Millions More Movement) National web site contains the following:

http://www.millionsmoremovement.com/about.htm - Prison Industrial Complex: "We demand freedom for all political prisoners held in U.S. prisons and detention facilities, both foreign and domestic. We demand an end to police brutality, mob attacks, racial profiling, the herding of our young men and women into prisons and the biological and chemical warfare perpetrated against our people."

Conversations with the local Millions More Movement indicate that they are trying to protect Mackey by claiming that the local chapter is 'not affiliated with' the MMM National movement.  This is, of course, a diversion but it shows the level of stress associated with this issue if it gets out into current political discourse. The leadership of the local MMM chapter are trying to distance themselves from the national organization and Farrakhan until the decision on Mackey has occurred.

The response I received from the local leaders of the MMM Charlotte (to my last newsletter) was

"Please do read, understand and support the Millions More Movement Charlotte, Inc. We are incorporated in North Carolina and an independent entity. Everyone that knows anything about the MMM Charlotte, Inc. knows that we are not a part of the Nation of Islam.  Please do pull up our website, http://www.mmmcharlottenc.org/. Harvey Fierson, VP, Sylvia L. Grier, Executive Director - MMM Charlotte, Inc."

I took them at their word and pulled up their web site. I have no doubt that they are a separate incorporated entity but that is hardly the point (or the problem). On the MMM National web site (under affiliates) it lists the MMM Charlotte. Under the MMM Charlotte web site it lists Nick Mackey as the 'chair' of the 'law and justice' Committee.

The local MMM Charlotte web site says: "MMM activities in Charlotte MIRROR the 'vision, Mission and Strategies of the National Movement".

Hmmmm............

So.........if the local MMM mirrors the 'vision' and 'strategies' of the MMM national organization doesn't that make them a part of the MMM National movement and Mackey a part of it as a leader of the Charlotte organization?

The phone number listed for the Charlotte office of the MMM is essentially the same as the number listed on the National web site for its Charlotte affiliate.

National web site 333 1691

Mecklenburg site  333 1690

Now as to the question of whether the MMM is associated with Farrakhan (and therefore the MMM Charlotte would be) that is more opaque.

Clearly there is a connection but it is also correct to say that the MMM is not a subsidiary of the Nation of Islam. Farrakhan is well known for founding the Million Man March and its successor organization the Millions More Movement (MMM) so they are 'related' at some level. Minister Farrakhan was the keynote speaker on October 16, 2007 at the MMM national convention according to the MMM national web site. On the Nation of Islam web site is the following statement:

http://www.noi.org/statements/advisory_press_071010.htm "We must remember, and never forget, that the ultimate aim and the denial objective of the United States Government towards Black people is that we must never become effectively organized. -The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan"

If Nick Mackey is to be taken seriously (as he wishes) he has a responsibility to answer directly why he is associating himself with an organization or individuals who believes in the 'vision' of the national organization.

Mr. Mackey has a responsibility to answer whether as a leader of the MMM in Charlotte (Chair of 'law and justice') he believes that Blacks are being held as 'political prisoners' in the jail he wishes to run.

Lke a lot of MMM Charlotte leaders, being in the MMM doesn't mean that they are followers of the "nation of Islam". The key distinction is that the MMM in Charlotte (and therefore one presumes Mackey as a leader of it) follows the National MMM views regarding Blacks as being 'political prisoners' as oppsed to law breakers. Regardless of the religious views of the individual running for office (which are irrelevant in my opinion), holding a belief that large portions of the Mecklenburg County jail population are there as political prisioners is a dangerous view for the potential Sheriff to hold. He should be required to answer that question directly along with his associations whth the MMM.

IN OTHER NEWS ON THE MACKEY FRONT:

Yesterday, Craig Madens, past Democrat Mayoral candidate and current talk show host jumped into the debate effectively claiming that the white Democrats on the Commission are basically 'racists' for refusing to approve Mackey. His pithy quote was essentially that commissioners don't mind Blacks being 'in the jail' but don't want a Black man to 'run the jail'. That is my paraphrase but you can view the WBTV segment here and see (and hear) for yourself.

Mr. Madens then demanded that at-large Commissioner Dan Ramirez (a US Citizen) provide his 'green card' to prove he was here legally. The only thing missing from this fight are brickbats and knives.

Night before last, the Mecklenburg County Democrat Party Executive Board (10 members) voted 6-1 to demand that the Commission Democrats (Helms, Roberts, Mitchell and Clarke) vote to confirm Mackey (Woodard is already in support). The Chairman of the Party (David Erdman) effectively ducked under the proverbial table and 'abstained' from the vote pleading the 5th. The Vice Chairman, Pat Patton voted 'no' (she is one of those that has filed a complaint about the Democrats internal processes).

In the meantime, Black activists are trying to get Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to come down and do a 'beat down' on Jennifer, Parks, Dumont and Norman to whip um into line for Mackey but the activists are having trouble raising the money necessary to pay them to come (and they don't do it for free unless they think they will get more national media attention to make it worthwhile).

Here are some Farrakhan quotes that I found referenced on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farrakhan

Many of the Jews who owned the homes, the apartments in the black community, we considered them bloodsuckers because they took from our community and built their community but didn't offer anything back to our community. Louis Farrakhan

"So I said to the members of the press, 'Why won't you go and look into what we are saying about the threats on Reverend Jackson's life?' Here the Jews don't like Farrakhan and so they call me 'Hitler'. Well that's a good name. Hitler was a very great man. He wasn't great for me as a Black man but he was a great German and he rose Germany up from the ashes of her defeat by the united force of all of Europe and America after the First World War. Yet Hitler took Germany from the ashes and rose her up and made her the greatest fighting machine of the twentieth century, brothers and sisters, and even though Europe and America had deciphered the code that Hitler was using to speak to his chiefs of staff, they still had trouble defeating Hitler even after knowing his plans in advance. Now I'm not proud of Hitler's evil toward Jewish people, but that's a matter of record. He rose Germany up from nothing. Well, in a sense you could say there is a similarity in that we are rising our people up from nothing, but don't compare me with your wicked killers." Sylvester, Monroe.
