"TWO DANS AND A JENNIFER"

Black Political Caucus has emergency meeting

Vote to defrock (un-endorse) Jennifer Roberts taken

Motion said to be made by Wilhelmenia Rembert

Seconded by Vilma Leake who is to serve with Jennifer (if elected)

Young Democrats and Hispanic Democrats leaders support dumping Jennifer according to report received

Goal was to rob Jennifer Roberts of Black votes because the

Roberts Campaign was said to be asking folks to not vote for the Black candidate - Harold Cogdell

Vote was 29-9 - read below for details on which way the vote went

 _______________________________________________________________

The Details (based on e-mails circulating about this matter).

According to an e-mail circulated by a Democrat Party loyalist, last Night (Sunday) the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte Mecklenburg (BPC) held an emergency meeting and took up a motion made by former CMS School Board Chair (and former BOCC Vice Chair) Wilhelmenia Rembert to un-endorse Jennifer Roberts and ask Black voters to not vote for her at the polls. The motion was seconded by Vilma Leake.

The back story on this starts with a Jennifer Roberts poll worker(s) at the South County Library who was telling folks to vote for the "Two Dans and Jennifer" - an all white slate made up of Dan Murrey (D), Dan Ramirez (R) and Jennifer Roberts (D).

Members of the BPC had overheard the poll worker (or workers) asking folks at the South County Library to vote for this all-white bipartisan ticket, abandoning Black Democrat Harold Cogdell.

Last year during the Mackey dustup certain Black Democrats claimed that they were going to get even with Jennifer for her refusal to support Nick Mackey for Sheriff. There was even a speech given at a local AME Zion church (from the pulpit) that Jennifer should be kicked out of office and that Black voters should reject her at the polls for disloyalty).

Nevertheless, she received the BPC's original endorsement for the fall campaign after failing to receive the endorsement for the Democrat primary. It is unusual for the BPC to reject someone in the primary and then endorse in the general election. The offer was made to paper over their differences until after the general election.

The Roberts campaign got wind of the situation and quickly removed the poll worker replace her with a senior campaign advisor but not before the damage had been done and the matter landed on the Black Political Caucus' agenda last night.

Wilhelmenia was said to have advocated to have Jennifer removed as did Vilma Leake and Dwayne Collins, Richard McElrath, and others.

The head of the Young Democrats (Rebecca Gomer), a Nick Mackey posse' member, was supposedly advocating Jennifer's removal. Since Ms. Gomer is white she has no vote (only Black members can cast votes at BPC meetings).

German DeCastro who fought for Nick Mackey's appointment and the head of the Hispanic Democrats supported dumping Jennifer because Mackey was willing to get rid of the 287g program at the jail while the winning Sheriff's candidate (Chipp Bailey) advocated to keep the program. Since Jennifer supported Chipp, the Hispanic Democrats were evidently in favor of dumping Jennifer off the BPC's endorsement list (though he had no vote either).

Harold Cogdell evidently said he understood the passions against Jennifer but said that doing so would hurt his cause if white voters didn't vote for him. From what I could tell, it was not so much an advocacy of Jennifer as it was a practical decision that if Black Democrats refuse to support Jennifer and White Democrats refuse to support him that it would hurt his campaign more than help.

Donna Dawson was said to be of the opinion that Black voters (and the BPC) needed to put the Mackey situation behind them and not risk taking on Jennifer who will likely win and end up Chairman again. She voted to NOT rescind according to this e-mail.

In the end, after a lengthy debate, the vote was 29-9 to NOT rescind the endorsement.

The question is whether this is really the end of the matter.

Then there is the issue that the folks that are in favor such as Vilma Leake have an evident hatred for Jennifer Roberts and a desire to kill her off politically while knowing that she will likely serve with her.

As for the election effects? Who knows.

BPC members and Hispanic and Young Democrats can still (and probably will) work to insure Jennifer gets as few votes as possible in order to foster racial Democrat voting.

Did Jennifer's campaign worker really push an all-white bi-partisan slate?

The info received says yes but it has not been confirmed. Perhaps the media can get to the bottom of this.
