October 6, 1999 - CMS Board Meeting. Democrats vote to appeal Judge Potters ruling banning race based busing.

If there is one and only one CMS School Meeting you should watch to get a flavor of the hostility and dysfunctional nature of Charlotte's Elected body, the October 9, 1999 meeting is the one to watch. While 6 years old, most of the folks in this are still in office (many still on the School Board).

When I ran for office in 1996 I ran with one slogan: "Neighborhood Schools. Here is my bumper sticker from that time:

In 1997 and 1998 we (those in favor of overturning the busing decision) talked about suing CMS. I met with then CMS Board Chair Arthur Griffin to ask him about it and he just chuckled and said that "Charlotte would NEVER abandon busing". I told him if he did not he would be sued and would lose in court. The powers on the School Board (mostly Democrats) and at the Chamber refused to consider compromise or  discussion.

So..........a lawsuit was filed by Bill Cappachione and later joined by some "intervenors" one of which was CMS Board member Larry Gauvreau. We won! and the decision was announced the fall of 1999.

In October 1999 the School Board met to discuss OPENLY (I think for the first time) the issue of assigning kids to school based on the color of their skin. This is an edited version of the highlights of this two hour meeting.
